Sounding Like Sarah

posted by Jen | 5:16 PM

I went out to the Gilruth today at 2:30 after I got off work (how cool is that!) to try out the new equipment/rooms/etc. As Becca says, it's pretty great. About the only complaint I have is that I couldn't figure out how to get the key to fit in the locker.

I used the elliptical machine which I've never done seriously before. You know, other than getting on Nick's and making the pedals go backwards. I was on there for 45 minutes, and I was happy to see that I'm not in as bad of shape as I could be. I did the "cardio" program for half an hour where it made me maintain the estimated 80% of max heart rate for my age, weight, blah, blah. I was pleasantly suprised to consistently want to push a little harder than it was telling me to. Apparently I'm very comfortable at 80% of max heart rate. Then I tried out the hill program for fifteen minutes, which I liked a lot.

Now, I can see why Sarah's gotten into putting stats for all her runs on her blog. It was very mesmerising watching the numbers count up. So, for Sarah...

Time: 45 min
Max Heart Rate: 168
Miles: 3.05
Average Speed: 4 mph (I was only going like 3.2 mph on the hill program)

I think either Nick's machine or the Gilruth machines are miscalibrated.

I used to do a 45 minute work out on Nick's machine, and I would average 4 mph and my heart rate would be ~175/

Anyway, I tried the "cardio" course on the Gilruth machine the first day I went, and I entered my age, sex, and weight, and it told me to maintain a heartrate of 155, which kept me going at 4 mph -- and after 45 minutes, I only just barely broke a sweat, it didn't feel like a serious workout, more like a quick walk.

The last few times at Gilruth, I've been doing the "hills" course (which is what I used to do on Nick's machine), going 4.5 - 5 mph (depending on the incline), which, I might add, is faster than I jog 3 miles. That gets my heart rate up to 175, but I was able to maintain it for 45 minutes -- I used the "talk test" to decide if I'm getting a good enough work out -- that is, going at a pace where I can talk, but it would require me to breath heavily and pant to have a conversation. For me, that appears to be a HR between 170-175.

Oh, and I was doing the one with the arm things, which, for me, is a little bit easier
