Hope
My package arrived today, and it sounds like I achieved my aim of encouraging a young mind interested in spaceflight.
For those that don’t understand why we spend money on human spaceflight, this is one big reason… Inspiration. Here’s a smart kid who may decide to study a STEM field because of an early interest in the Space Shuttle. Who knows what he may one day achieve? He could be the one that discovers life on another planet or figures out how to achieve interstellar travel. He could find a cure for a horrible disease or invent a clean power generation system that will provide power to millions.
I find myself pretty down about the direction of NASA these days. But I guess there’s still something of the optimist in me, because when I think of Hank, my heart is filled with hope.

That is totally awesome, you gave Hank something he’ll treasure and remember for the rest of his life! I believe a legacy is always about the impact had on people’s lives, and you’re spot-on Jen on the shuttle program’s legacy. What an impact on all of us, especially on our imaginations & aspirations! The shuttle to me symbolizes that anything is possible, and while I will miss the spectacular lauches and such, it’s impact on me and my life will always remain.
It’s great to hear that kids are still inspired by the space program. He must have been so excited to get your package!
I am sad about the direction of the space program too. My kids love watching the shuttles launch as well, and my oldest has always loved astronomy. And you make me cool because I could tell my kids I know someone who works at NASA. And that is apparently VERY cool!
That’s funny because I recently reconnected with a friend on FB who also has a space-crazy young son. Apparently, he’s obsessed with payloads!!
So, I’ve been putting together a package, myself, and just need to send it off.
