Rid of the Cat

posted by Jen | 8:40 AM

We had fish night last night for the first time in a while, which was fun. After dinner, we had a good time reminiscing about the semester Jason and Gavin lived together when we were co-ops. "Well, there was that time that Gavin asked me to go to the mall with him, and then after 20 minutes left me alone with Jason to go meet another girl..." And, everybody marveled at my swollen feet, which I had shamelessly displayed on top of the coffee table.

Cookie went home last night, so we are catless again. I made a sarcastic comment at a work gathering yesterday that we had to get home by 7:00 to "get rid of a cat". Gavin's boss took the comment at face value and started trying to convince me that the cat wouldn't hurt our baby, and that I just needed to steer clear of the litter, and... I had to quickly correct him that we were just cat sitting and that I wouldn't get rid of a pet preemptively like that. :)

Gavin dragged me in to work at 8:00 this morning, which is good because I need to get home tonight, clean, get groceries, and do some laundry in preparation for my mom and sister getting here tomorrow.

Out on the Town

posted by Jen | 10:26 AM

I went to see Wicked (the musical) last night for the 2nd time. I went when it was in Houston last year, too. Glinda was much more, uh, high energy this time. She was very funny, though. I think I liked her better than the one from last year, but it was a bit over the top a couple times. She actually got so out of control once, that she (accidentally, I think) threw her want offstage. I say that I think it was accidental because Elphaba started laughing.

Anyway, if you haven’t seen it and you like musicals, I definitely recommend this one. It is one of my favorites that I’ve ever seen live. Maybe that’s because this is its first tour off Broadway, so it is still pretty lavish. It’s really good.

And tonight is the Astro’s opening day! I love the beginning of baseball season. I’m always so into it. The only bad thing is that I actually have something I have to do at work this afternoon, so I couldn’t try to talk Sarah and Jason into skipping out on the afternoon to go party at the street festival before the game. Oh, well - baseball tonight! Wahoo!

Gojira!

posted by Gavin | 8:33 AM

Tonight we will unwrap the plastic from the Gojira DVD and watch it after grilling salmon and eating pumpkin pie. It'll be a good night. :)

Grown up?

posted by Jen | 12:58 PM

Mark came over last night to help decorate for the Halloween party. The combination of the stuff I have and the stuff he has has made a marked improvement to the ambiance for this year. The entry in particular is pretty spectacular. It's going to be fun!

However, he did persist in insinuating that I am *old*. He kept asking questions like "I'm used to parties with 22-year-olds... What kind of music do adults usually have at parties." I kept thinking, my God I'm only a few years older than you! Is this what I have to look forward to for the rest of life? People 5 years younger than me (of which there will necessarily be more and more) thinking I'm ancient? When did 30 become too old to listen to the same music as 20?

Weeknight

posted by Jen | 10:34 AM

Saw Jo last night at Mi Luna. She did her best to shock us all with the colorful life she's leading in Nac these days. :) On the way back home, Christina accused Becca, Cari, and I of not being capable of talking about anything except work. This is the danger of hanging out with co-workers all the time. It's a difficult pitfall to avoid.

I have to get ready for the Halloween party tonight. This week has been busier than I expected. At least the house is mostly still clean from last weekend.

A Good Day

posted by Gavin | 8:45 PM

Saturday was great for three reasons.

First, Jen's birthday party. Four cars, five dogs, and ten people (Becca, Sarah, Jose, Buzz, Debbie, Troy, Val, and not-so-little Tayne) convoyed down to Bolivar. It was a popular trip when we were co-ops but I don't think we had been back since. It was a cloudy, windy Saturday and so we pretty much had the beach to ourselves. The dogs ran free, Tayne went swimming, and everyone pretty much had fun.

Second, A&M won against Missouri! We watched the first 15 minutes of the game, it looked like it was going to be good. I had just been commenting to Sarah and Rich on Friday that I thought A&M might be ranked this year (much to their amusement) and, viola, now they are.

Finally, after we got home late in the evening, Jen gave the dogs a bath while I drove to the store to grab some dogfood. While I was there I grabbed some donuts and, on a whim, wandered past the DVD section. For months, nay, years, I've been asking for the original Gojira on DVD. In 1954 Japan made perhaps the greatest of all monster movies, considered by many to be a cinematic masterpiece, later to be re-edited and released in the US as Godzilla. But the original Japanese version, with subtitles, has never been available in the US. UNTIL NOW! There it was on the shelf, a sleek looking box with 2 movies, both the original Japanese and American versions of my favorite monster of all time! Naturally, I bought it. I've been grinning about it ever since. It's sitting next to my keyboard at the moment.

Gojira party at our place soon.

Party Time

posted by Jen | 6:29 PM

Today, all 3 dogs have done pretty much nothing but sleep. They're all worn out from a great beach party yesterday. I'm a bit worn out myself, and I've been happy to relax on this rainy afternoon and listen to an internet replay of the UW - OSU football game. It's 4th quarter right now, and things are looking not-so-good.

On the way home from Bolivar yesterday, I remarked to Gavin that my 20-year-old self would probably be horrified to know that my 30-year-old self would leave the beach at 9:30PM - probably about the same time as I would have been arriving 10 years ago. Still, I didn't get to bed until midnight, which is about as late as I can go these days.

I guess life goes on.

Kids Say

posted by Jen | 10:14 AM

OK, so it's way past time for me to post already.

I talked to my sister yesterday. She says that Caroline has been asking for us ever since we left Wyoming. She was in the grocery store the other day, and there was a guy that looked *a bit* like Gavin. Caroline starts yelling "Gabbin! Gaaaabbbin!" across the store. Jessica had trouble convincing her that it wasn't Gavin. They also took a car trip over the holiday weekend, and as soon as they buckeled Caroline into her car seat she started demanding "Jen! Come Jen!". Doesn't that just melt your heart?

I had a busy weekend. Here's the short version...

Sundance Grill in Seabrook is good, but the birds are mean (I got pooped on and pecked at) and the tiki tourches catch on fire - more than they're supposed to, I mean.

Talladega Nights is 60% funny, 15% boring, and 25% over the top.

We were the "Bubba Burger Lucky Row" at the Astros game. We got t-shirts and coupons for frozen hamburgers shaped like Texas.

I hate cleaning.

One more of my friends is 30 now.

Josh went to DC, and I ate lots of fried stuff.

So after Becca's post today, I googled my name. Interesting results...

"Jennifer M..." produced
My WoT rant on Amazon
Mars Exploration on Inbox Robot - my name shows up in the google description, but I can't find it on the actual page
My Flickr profile
A bunch of false positives that have Gavin, Mike, or Lauren listed

"Jen M..." produced
The Quote Board - flashback
A bunch of Yuri's Night listings
Everybody's blogs, including my favorite post of Becca's ever
A bunch of false positives that have Gavin, Mike, or Lauren listed

"Jennifer S..." produced
My co-op bio - #1, I was suprised that the #1 Jennifer S... listing is actually me
The UW Sigma Gamma Tau alumni list

"Jen S..." produced
A listing of names flown on Stardust - forgot I did that

So, as far as the internet knows, I'm famous for being friends with people, Yuri's Night, liking space, and dissing Robert Jordan. My star is rising.

Slippery Road

posted by Jen | 9:37 PM

I have a slight cold. This isn't too suprising considering how busy/stressed I've been. I woke up today wondering if I shouldn't sit Schlitterbann out, but I was too interested in seeing the water park to follow through. So, off to Galveston we went.

The water park was fun, although it is obviously still a work in progress. The lines were pretty long, but that's what you'd expect on a Sunday. The fact that it was the NASA picnic probably made things slightly worse. Anyway, it was very fun. They have the best "lazy" river I've ever been in. Very cool.

I took like a 5 hour nap when we got home, so I'm thinking that I was at least partially right about wondering if I should go today. Hopefully, I won't regret it later this week. I'm going to take Wednesday off in preparation for working a few weekends pretty soon here.
